How old do I need to be to drive a Detour Campervans?
You need to be aged 25 or older to rent a campervan from us. We cannot provide insurance to people under the age of 25.
How and when should I make my bookings?
We always suggest as soon as you know the dates you wish to take your holiday - go online and book. To confirm we need 20% deposit and then the balance is due 28 days prior to your hire. The best way to submit your credit card details are though the secure server bookings page on our website. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate on calling us on +353 (0)46 9031481.
What currency will my Credit Card be charged?
All credit card transactions will be processed in the card's Country of Origin currency when available; otherwise they will be charged in Euro. This applies to all bookings made through our website.
Additonal rental charges
Any person renting a campervan who does not have an Irish or UK Driving Licence is subject to an additional charge. If you wish to have a second driver there is no problem adding one, a daily charge applies.
The charges are as follows:
Non UK Irish driving licence €12.50 per day
2nd Driver €12.50 per day
50% excess reduction on security deposit €20 per day
How can I amend my booking?

Do I need a special drivers licence to drive a campervan in Ireland?
Once you have a drivers licence that is valid to drive a car then you can drive one of our campervans.
Any non Irish or Uk driving licences are subject to a €12.50 per day charge.
Our campervans are very similar to a car to drive which makes it easier to naviaget around some of Irelands more winding roads.
How do I collect my vehicle?
All Campervan rentals will take place from our depot in Navan, which is located 30 minutes from Dublin Airport. If you wish to get a bus from Dublin city or the Dublin airport this will take between 45minutes to 1 hour. A fee of €80 will be charged for Dublin Airport collections.
Can I park and sleep in the campervan wherever I want, or do I have to stay in a campground?
It is not always necessary to go to a camp ground. It is acceptable to stop in a suitable location as long as there are no signs saying "No Parking/Overnight Camping". Use common sense and courtesy. Please remember to take any rubbish for proper disposal later.
Can I reduce my insurance excess?
Yes. You can reduce the insurance excess by 50% for any damage caused in a collision to either the campervan or third party property. See website for current costs.
This does not cover the cost of damage to windscreens, tyres or wing mirrors. You can purchase our “Sensible” package. See website for current costs.
What deposit do I pay on collection of the campervan?
Detour Campervans combine the Insurance Excess, Security Deposit into one deposit payment.
A refundable deposit of €1,000 is payable for the rental of a Detour Campervan.
The Deposit is payable by credit card only on collection.
The amount will be debited from the card and is returnable within 7 working days on the following conditions:
- Campervan returned to the agreed location, on the agreed date and time
- Campervan returned with interior clean, waste tank emptied and the fuel tank full.
- All items are returned at end of hire in clean and full working order as per the 'Departure Check list'.
- A cleaning fee of €100 will be charged if the vehicle is not returned with the interior in a clean condition.
What are Detour campervans office opening hours?
Our office opening hours are 9.00 - 18.00, 7 days a week. Outside of office hours just drop us a mail and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
Early and Late collection of the campervan can be arranged prior to arrival. Early collections are from 7.30 - 9.00. Late collections are from 18.00 - 19.30. Please note, additional fees will be charged.
What are Detour campervans depot opening hours?
The depot is open 7 days a week for rentals during high season. Collection and return of the campervan is between 10.00 - 17.00, seven days a week. Early and Late collection of the campervan can be arranged prior to arrival. Early collections are from 7.30 - 9.00. Late collections are from 18.00 - 19.30. Please note, additional fees will be charged.
What happens if I return the campervan late?
All our hires are 24 hr periods, if you pickup your campervan at 14.00 on the first day it is due back before 14.00 on your last day. If your return is after the due time an additional days hire will be charged.
Can I collect my campervan outside of depot opening hours?
Early and Late collection of the campervan can be arranged prior to arrival.
Early collections are from 7.30 - 9.00. Late collections are from 17.00 - 19.30.
How long does it take for the check in and check out process?
Allow 40 minutes for the check in and demonstration of the Detour Campervans. Allow 40 minutes for us to check the campervan over when you are returning it.
How will I know how to use the campervan?
Don't worry, lots of our campervan hire customers are first timers! Regardless of your campervan knowledge, we complete a comprehensive check in and safety demonstration of all features of the campervan. We will show you how to use the camping gas, heating, electricity and of course how to empty the toilet!
Are Motorway tolls included?
If you decide to take the Motorway to the destination be advised as some of the Motorways in Ireland have tolls on them.
Obviously what we would recommend is to take the more scenic route but if you have to be somewhere then the Motorway will get you there quicker.
The M50 which is the orbital road around the greater Dublin area is a barrier free toll road with the toll between the M3 & M4 exits. There is tolls located on the following roads, remember that a campervan will only be charges at a car rate at these tolls. Below are the locations and fares for all tolls in Ireland. All but one toll works as one would expect, payment as you pass through. The only exception is the M50 barrier free toll which can be paid either online at eflow.ie or by phoning 1890 50 10 50.
